What a nice looking commer. Good pic Barrie. My father used to drive commer, s and other types of a appliances in Tayside many years ago. Ours were commer QX, s with carmichael bodywork with full length crew doors.

There were only three Commer water tenders built by Plaxton: the above and a pair for North Riding of Yorkshire (HVN 777/778).
They did however build a number of the AFS Bedford EPs.

What pump was carried? A demounted trailer pump or a Coverntry Climax featherweight?

These incorporated the existing fibreglass front cowl which Plaxtons were already using at that time on their Commer chassis luxury coaches.

Because the coaches had no conventional front doors, nor did the trio of water tenders.

One was stationed at Whitby in 1958. It had a rear mounted Dennis no2 500 IGPM pump. At the time it shared quarters with a LWB Land-Rover - which towed another Dennis no2 trailer pump - and an ex NFS Fordson pump escape with a front mounted Barton-American 350 IGPM pump.

This engine was supplied to Caernarfonshire Fire Brigade originally based in Bangor Fire Station; transfered to Caernarfon. It ended its operational life at Dolgarog Aluminium works in the Conwy valley. Purchased by an enthusiast from Llandudno sold on to Porthmadog Fire Station vintage group, where some restoration work was carried out. Sold to its present owner who has finished the restoration programme. This vehicle was built by Plaxtons coach builders and is a very rare model.
