This special water tender is on a MAN military specification off-road chassis.

It does not meet the standard DIN specification of that time, which called for a 16 tonne GVW 4X4 chassis and a 5, 000 liter water tank.

However, it was added to the city's fleet especially to help cope with the risk of train fires - especially tankers - in the city, s extensive train yards.

The military chassis enabled it to cross extensive networks of rail tracks with ease, and the oversized foam tank gave it a useful first strike capability if hydrocarbons were involved.
