Steel turntable ladders were first introduced - by Magirus - in 1933. This lighter material made it possible to build 100 foot (30 meter) ladders, which very quickly became pretty much the norm in the UK, as well as in Germany and other European countries.

Because their straight stick ladders were mid mounted for many years, North American fire services retained the 85 foot aerial ladder much later, building most 100 for aerials as tiller steered trailer rigs. In the 1960s, they started building 100 foot rear mounts, starting with Mack CF Magirus units, although a few even longer steel Magirus rear mounts were special ordered in earlier years...
