The D series at the right is one of the first eleven D series sold to UK fire services in 1967. These had the standard tiling truck cab and a separate crew compartment. Not exactly elegant, but practical and inexpensive!
These - and later additional orders - replaced the many older Commer Miles units in the Gloucestershire fleet. In this photo two examples are shown; an older mid 1950s T grille water tender on the left and a newer early 1960s escape with the later full width silver painted grille.
The D series was eventually supplied to around thirty UK brigades, as well as several factory brigades, but sales never caught up with the Bedford TK - which was introduced several years earlier and was also a great fire appliance chassis.
Many D series also went into fire service fleets in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and other overseas locations...
