Firemaster at the Duplex fire

Here is another picture of the Darlington Firemaster at work. It was taken at the Duplex garage fire in the 1960’s. The photograph is courtesy of the local newspaper - ‘The Northern Echo’. If you Google ‘Norther Echo Duplex Fire’ there are more pictures of this and other classic fire appliances at work.

Yes I did. Nice to see good old Dennis F12 pump escape PHN 999 hard at work, along with one of the newer diesel Dennis water tenders. Not often that the brigade, for all its rather limited resources, had to call on the lads from Stockton to help out!

One thing to notice that is very different from life in the States is that none of the photos show any police on scene. Still stranger, the Echo talks about "forty police and firemen" being there. One has to wonder how they got there and where they all went when they arrived? Walking, or bicycles perhaps? And thence to a tea shoppe?

When I was a lad, I used to enjoy gazing at the shiny new cars in the Duplex Garage. Funny enough, I ended up selling them for a living, along with trucks and yes, a handful of fire appliances too...
