Storrington West Sussex Jan 29th 2017

Sunday Jan 29th 2017 saw a "have a go" retained recruitment day at Storrington, with the stations two appliances Scania P270/CP31/JDC HX06 GZA and Mercedes Sprinter 4 x 4 / W H Bence HX64 LDE, being joined by Ford Transit PCV HY59 EEN and Dennis Sabre HX04 WGF (in rear drill yard) from the Service Training Centre at Worthing. A similar event had been held at Selsey the day before featuring Chichesters HRT and East Witterings boat.

Jon:

Great picture!

Interesting that two of the three trucks are van based rather than being "full sized".

What is a PCV? Also - is the Sprinter 4X4 a pumper, a rescue or something else?

Rob, - only just spotted your comment on here, so a very belated response. PCV - personel carrying vehicle - or minibus! Used by the Training Centre at Worthing for general transport. The Sprinter 4 x 4 is a bit of everything - designed to replace the Super G L4T, but has a variety of kit, high pressure hose reel, battery operated RTC cutting gear, enviromental protection equipment (hence sponsored by Enviroment Agency), amongst more normal small gear, so intended to attend incidents either as a specialist 4 x 4, or as Storringtons 2nd appliance, the 2nd WTL (Dennis Rapier) having been removed a couple of years ago. Midhurst 6 x6 Sprinter has similar equipment, but not the Enviroment agency kit. Both Sprinters are supposed to be trialing the use of battery operated RTC kit compared to Hydraulic and Electric RTC equipment on WTLs & HRTs in West Sussex.

Thanks.

It seems like another effort to get a quart out of a pint pot, as the saying goes.

Just another reason to think that the UK fire service will eventually have to address its cost concerns by starting to recruit unpaid volunteers - like every other country in the World - instead of relying on cutting back on paid staff and getting rid of fully equipped appliances, only to replace them with less capable vehicles.
