The various short and long wheelbase two and four door 4X4 pickups and kombis were developed by Steyr-Puch in Austria for Mercedes and sold under both brands.

They more or less mirror the old Land-Rover "Defender" specifications - and were supplied to many military, civil defense and fire service
organizations in various countries.

"G-wagen" is the abbreviation for "Gelaendewagen", which translates as "cross-country vehicle" - pretty self-explanatory.

They were mainly used as light pumpers, brush units with skid mounted tanks, light rescue trucks, command vehicles, personnel transporters and general purpose units. In many cases, they replaced Land-Rovers because of their reputation for ruggedness and reliability.
