AEC/HCB Angus ET Sheffield FB NWJ578K

1970 photo by N Tarling. Was this the first British appliance fitted with a Hiab crane - for motorway work on the M1 round Sheffield. NWJ was the forerunner of many modern vehicles of this type. I have an excellent model handmade for me many years ago based on the Dinky AEC - see Marcel's transport models site here picture 1049.

I had an opportunity to buy this ET about 25 years the same yard was the ex West Ham Fire Brigade AEC Foam Tender RJD 344 which was as rare as this far as I know NWJ was broken for spares (Hiab and winch) and RJD became a showmans tractor !!...should have bought them both !

I have just remembered when this left service it went to the McCormick recovery form's yard in Eastleigh, Hampshire where it was preserved I think and went to rallies.

It looks remarkably modern, except for the slam lockers and the odd full height door...

I bought it from John McCormick minus the Hiab and then, due to a misunderstanding with a farmer at Bishopstoke, it got broken up and I wasn't very impressed! My language could not be repeated here!
