All the wagon's taken in this Photo are Meeting Up to part in a MAJOR TRAINING EXERCISE. Which has been on going for over 4 weeks now. Different Brigade staff learning new skills etc.

Because they're all broke, quite simply! Austerity has hit fire brigades really hard, and will probably do so for many years to come. Year after year their budgets are being slashed, and so they have to save money somehow.

They had a nice 2010 32M Volvo/Bronto ALP but a fire person tried to remove the Bronto with a low rail bridge ! So maybe this is a stop gap. Wonder who is running the oldest frontline fire appliance in UK? This must be a contender at quarter of a century old.

In Edinburgh there are currently an "E" and a "G" reg Scania / Metz TL`s on the run at Tollcross and Sighthill respectivley, both bought second hand from Mid and West Wales FRS.

Whats wrong with running older machines? If serviced, safe and reliable then nothing. It was common practice years ago until the fashion for spending public money like idiots became the norm. Reality check boys, the good times are long over, suck it up.

Don't forget this ALP when nearly new with Bedfordshire suffered a major 'roll over' accident...I saw it back at Angloco in a very sorry state !

John: It does seem that UK brigades tend to have shorter appliance service lives than in most other countries, but it does not seem they are necessarily any busier. My personal view is that this may be because of leasing, which is more popular in Britain. The leasing companies want to get the units back while they are still fully serviceable, so that they can be resold at a profit to a less affluent export market after a relatively inexpensive switch to left hand drive.
Certainly the ex-British vehicles finding their way to various South American countries tend to be quite a few years newer than the German or Dutch units they are buying.
Nor do I think keeping older units in service for longer is a problem, as long as spare parts are still readily available. The one downside is that it takes longer to standardize on new innovations, such as CAFS systems, which are often difficult to retrofit.
As an example of what can be done, here in Chicago we have a 95 foot Snorkel on reserve. This is called out to major industrial structure fires, and is well over thirty years old.
