Micronesia - Chuuk Atoll
New to the New Zealand Fire Service in 1986 was this Austral built Hino FF173. It served in the North Island at Patea and Wanganui before being transferred to the South Island and being allocated to Runanga. Following retirement transfer to rural fire or disposal awaited. However a Christchurch firefighter having performed volunteer work on Chuuk Atoll in Micronesia was made aware of the loss of the islands only fire appliance some time earlier. Some hard work saw the donation of this appliance from the NZFS while it left fully equipped following donations of both new and retired gear. It was transferred to the Atoll by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 2013. It was photographed while based at Harewood fire station in Christchurch in October 2012 while slowly being fitted out ready for the trip.
