Pumper for forest fire

The FD of the city of Marseille (BMPM), France has several units mounted on Unimog bodies in service. This is a light version of a pumper that is mostly used against forest fires.

BMPM operates approximately 43 in various sizes, with tanks ranging from 1, 000 to 4, 000 liters on 4X4 chassis and 7, 000 on 6X6. Some have two door three man cabs but many have this type of four door cab, which can seat four or five. The two rear seats on this short four door cab face outwards.

All are fitted with both a 23 mm high pressure hose reel and a 32 mm unlined hose reel, which is designed to be stretched over inflammable brush if necessary. They also have "pump and roll" capability, so they can operate fully independently as self-contained mobile firefighting entities.

Extra on-duty and on-call staffing is assigned to several stations and "advanced positions" during the summer and autumn fire season to man several of these Unimogs, when the temperature, humidity and wind conditions pose an elevated brush fire risk.

They are supported by three 12, 000 liter 6X6 Actros tanker, and of course the air base near the city has both helicopters and fixed wing tanker aircraft.
