2009 Kenworth/Crimson Engine-TankEngine-Tank 184 of the Thompson Fire Engine Company of Thompson Hill, Connecticut is a 2009 Kenworth/Crimson equipped with a 1500 GPM pump, a 1000 GWT and carries 20 gallons of Class A foam and 1200’ of LDH. In addition to being the department’s primary attack pumper, it is also a rolling pictorial of the department’s history. A mural on the left side of the engine depicts the department’s first piece of fire-fighting equipment, a 1827 Cooper Hand Tub, which was purchased in 1832 and was the first fire engine in the town of Thompson. Amazingly, this rig is still in existence and still owned by the fire company. This engine actively served the department until 1915 at which time it was replaced by a hand-pulled chemical fire extinguisher, which was a disappointment to the firemen, who had wanted a steamer. Finally, in 1938 the department received its first piece of motorized fire apparatus, a 1938 Ford/Maxim, which is depicted in a mural on the right side of the engine. Shown driving the 1938 rig is well-respected former Chief and long-time department member Doug Langer, who tragically succumbed to cancer in 2009. Truly, this truck is a “moving” tribute to the 181- year heritage of this northeastern Connecticut department.
