FDNY Engine 23 Mack Midtown

Fire Department City of New York, Engine 23 and a half! This is a 1984 Mack/Ward 79 1000gpm Pumper fleet No MP8413, which is actuality a spare hence the half! Engine 23's assigned unit was a 1985 Mack/Ward 79 1000gpm pumper fleet No 8508, seen in Midtown Manhattan on Sept 3rd 1996

Many FDNY companies add slogans and cartoons to their trucks, such as "Outstanding" (Rescue 1) "Pride of Midtown" or the "Tonka Truck", as well as some modifications to the paintwork, including flags or shamrocks, etc.

I think it helps members identify more closely with their own company, as well as with the brotherhood in general. But it does seem to be unique to New York - other big city departments do not go in for this kind of individual decoration at all.

Chicago's two-piece snorkel squads are 1A and 1B and 2A and 2B, but it does not get any funnier than that. Los Angeles city has a number of two-piece Engine companies, and their second unit is given a 20.. number. An example would be Engine 18 with E18 and E218.
