New Zealand Hino Christchurch City Council

Shown elsewhere on this site when it was allocated to the Brooklands volunteer brigade, this 2011 Hino GT8JHKA was built for the Christchurch City Council by Mills Tui. It is now based at the Bottle Lake Forest rural fire depot where it was photographed in April 2013 following a major fire on the Port Hills in Christchurch. An identical tanker also completed by Mills Tui but in 2009 is owned by the Council and allocated to the Little River brigade.

David, would I be right in saying that in New Zealand, the NZFS is a national authority responsible mainly for the cities, and in rural areas firefighting is provided by volunteer firefighters under the control of the local council?
Also, do both the NZFS and the rural fire service report to one agency, or are they managed separately?

Not quite. Many non urban areas are covered by volunteer firefighters operating under the NZ Fire Service. Isolated rural areas, selected forest assets or brigades that for various reasons do not enter or fall under the NZ Fire Service form fire parties or fire forces that in most cases fall under council control.

Although rural fire parties and NZFS brigades work together and can and frequently do attend the same incidents they are essentially managed separately. The NZ Fire Service is funded through insurance levies on property while rural fire parties are funded through local council rates.
