This is not an Unic . It is a Fiat 684 . Year of construction 1972 .

The VdF certainly do use some ancient apparatus. Forty years is quite a service life for an aerial truck in a major city like Milan!

Most large US cities keep their aerial trucks around 12 to 15 years, London seems to have settled for twenty, and most German cities turn their aerials in after around 30 years. A forty-year service life is approaching what is commonplace in places like Russia and South America.

I do agree with Rob, France aims now for 19/20years for TL, Tokyo was 17years, I was surprised to see this TL in Milan, it was in the outskirt suburbs, however its not an excuse, I do not know if still in service.

JP - its not only ladder trucks. The VdF has recently embarked on a long overdue replacement program, buying a lot of Mercedes and Volvo trucks to replace old IVECO and FIAT pumpers, but I have seen some really old equipment even in some of their major cities.

Unfortunately these are active duty ladders . Of course generally they are reserve trucks , but sometimes they are the only resource of fire stations in vertical interventions .
