Staffordshire F&RS have long had a partnership with County Kerry in the Republic Of Ireland whereby retired appliances are given a new lease of life in the Emerald Isle.

This is one of three ex-Staffordshire Ford D1317/CFE pumps sold around 1990. The three were originally registered PFA 536/8 W. They were new to Longton, Newcastle and Stafford before moving on to Rugeley, Training School and Uttoxeter.

Uttoxeter crews hated theirs. They would often blast passed traffic on an emergency call and then, rather embarrassingly, be overtaken by said traffic as soon as they hit a hill! Plus they were fluorescent pink!

The 1317 had the Perkins 511 V8, which is the same engine as used in fire appliances of all sorts built by Carmichael, Dennis, Dodge, ERF, S&D and others. It had adequate power for the job, and it sounds as if these 1317s had the wrong rear axle ratio(s). Down to the CFO, not the truck builder! (The D1614, with a much smaller turbo six, did the job for several other brigades.)
