This neat photo illustrates so clearly one very important reason why FDNY still operate the old Baker Aerialscope tower ladders.

Thanks to their mid mount configuration these are a lot lower than the rear mount towers most other fire departments use, and they would simply not be able to fit into many of FDNY's older stations.

There are a lot of these historic stations still in daily use, especially in lower Manhattan and Midtown, many of them well over a hundred years old.
