M886 RWL returns to its old station

A very welcome visitor to the 2010 Buckingham open day was preserved M886 RWL, making a return to the station where it spent most of its working life. This Renault Midliner/Emergency One rescue pump was new to Gerrards Cross fire station in 1994 and whilst there featured in both the ITV series 'Blues N Twos' and a children's book about fire engines. It served in Buckingham from 1996 to 2002, seeing action during the severe floods of 1998, and was then converted to a WrL and transferred to Chesham. In 2006 it became a reserve appliance for a year before being sold at auction, and is undergoing a gradual restoration back to its rescue pump configuration. It is a credit to the present owners and attracted much attention both from the crews and the public.

Tidy .. very tidy. Had the 'RWL' suffix numbers in the registration been in a slightly different order, it would have been very appropriate for the appliance in its 'WrL' configuration ! As the caption rightly says, a credit to its then (current?) owners.

Buckinghamshire was one of very few British fire brigades who bought Renault appliances.

They are still very rare with fire services outside France and the former French colonies, with a few operating in Belgium and Poland - and, for some reason, they are almost universal with Chilean fire services, often sharing quarters with American rigs!

They do of course dominate the scene in France, but French fire services operate Scania, Mercedes, IVECO and MAN trucks too in quite decent numbers.
