What a cracking photo.

I wonder if the Merc will last as long as the AEC?

Added by Neal Glover on 27 February 2018.
I doubt it very much, Neal. But why would anyone want to! Look at it: it's nothing but a ulititarion piece of modernism. I've no doubt it out-performs the old girl a hundred-fold (which, I suppose, is its reason for being), but it has no curves, no charm and only appeals to the human brain; hearts don't come into it. And to restore, and ultimately, preserve a piece of social history, I think it needs to be a bit of a looker! And this old girl had certainly got appeal. In those days designers were artists and not computerised engineers like they are today. Nostalgia is a sentiment on the decline. The modern world has no need for it. Sadly.

There are lots of 1954 and much earlier vintage Mercedes fire trucks to be found in numerous countries around the World, so it is not a dumb question.

There are of course no Maudslays (or AECs!)in production nowadays, so anyone who survives us for another fifty six years will unfortunately not be able to compare a new one to a current production Mercedes...

I have to agree that nostalgia is not what it used to be!
