Shoreham fire station,probably taken in 1973.
i think that the ATV was a foam tender,i am sure one of our friends from W Sussex can confirm this.

Hello Bob,yes this appliance was converted to a FOT(Foam Operating Tender)by brigade workshops and was used until 1974.It was then replaced by a converted Dennis F8 Pump with the registration UPX174.The later Dennis F8 remained in service until 1982,then the brigade got a Dennis purpose built Foam Tender.
Historical Note:The Austin is now in preservation and is actually shown on this site,also the old Dennis F8 I mensioned is still beleaved to be in use in Malta in the Docks.This can also be seen on this site by looking at countries(Malta).Pete.

Yes it was the FoT then. Replaced by a Dennis F8 conversion (UPX 174), then a new Dennis DF FoT (FPO 24X). No FoT now, they rely on containerised foam on the OSUs at Bognor Regis & Horley.

Hello Pete, we must have been looking at this photo at the same time. Just one point, I have never heard of a Foam Operating Tender in West Sussex or anywhere else. The 'Fo' is for Foam and the 'T' for Tender. It was certainly just called a Foam Tender when I was there, although strictly it was just a Foam Carrier. The F8 and the Dennis DF were proper Foam Tenders though.

I just thought I'd mension that the Landrover was actually from 1966(reg-KPX928D).Bob,if you took this picture in 1973,did you take a picture of the 1972 Dennis F49 that should have been on station at that time.

Sorry,slight mistake on my part in reference to my last comment.The old eyes are not to good these days and its been pointed out to me the registration includes BP as the last part of the reg.This means the Landrover is either 1604 BP,or 1605 BP.I have'nt got any idea why in 1973 this actual appliance was on this station.

Folks - any idea why West Sussex painted the Land Rovers grey, or grey/green for a while in the 1960s. Seems an odd colour for an appliance unless there is a war on and it belongs to the AFS! This is a cracking photo - Can not quite make out what is in the bay inside - is it Dennis F8 UPX 263? I have found a note that says Land Rover 1605 BP was moved to Shoreham in 1968, but not sure how long it stayed or if it is accurate. Jon.

Jon,Bristol Bob thinks he took this photo in 1973-wrong,this picture actually dates back to something like 1965.Why?,the Landrover is still equiped with Winkworth Electric Bell.Also if you look in the bay you can see Dennis F8 UPX 293.Records show this was swopped from East Preston on the 26/11/65.The Landrovers were equiped with Blues & Two's in 1966.The info was provided to me by our old friend Bob Carver so I do hope this helps in your research.Pete.

Hi Pete, I see why you think the photo may be earlier, but I don't think the case is proven. In 1973 the series 1 Land Rover L4Ts were still around being used as run arounds by BA Instructors and others (including me). Horns were fitted under the bonnet. I also don't think it is a Dennis F8 in the bay. Difficult to see, but if it was, then a bell should be visible in the bit you can see. It looks more like a flat fronted Bedford to me (like 68 KPX). If Bob thinks he took the photo in 1973, I think that it is still possible.

PS - Jon - the Land Rovers were bought in a standard manufacturer's colour and it was not considered necessary to spend extra money painting them red.

Pete,there is absolutely no way that I took this picture in 1965,for a number of reasons which I will not bore you with.
I did get the year wrong,it was 27th September 1972,my one and only visit to this station.
Re the colours of the land rovers,I took a green cliff rescue one at Eastbourne that same week.

Hello Chaps,it is a Dennis in the background,silver body but not sure what the front colour was.
There was also another land rover pump next to it but my pictures are too dark to send to this site.

Hi Tony/Bob,thanks for your input and I agree,I think this picture is from around 1973/74.Bob Carver was not having is comments past onto this site for some reason,so he sent me the info to forward on.Bob knows more then I ever will on the movements of appliances,and the brigades history so I thought the information passed on was correct.Pete.

hi guys its interesting knowing the history you guys are going on about but comments aside is that landrover in the picture in the middle of being painted red ans its half red at the front ??? and does any one have a picture of this old landrover , I like the soft top unit

Gents, thanks for the extra info. If it was a Dennis Bob, then it must have been a F8 in the picture. The Land Rover next to it would have been a L4L (a L4T with a triple short extension ladder). They were series 2 Land Rovers and attended chimney fires with a crew of three. As 1972 was the build date for the F49, then if it was on station in September 1972 it would have been brand new. If not then it was probably a Bedford 'S' WrE. Calvin - I think the red you can see was reflection. Whilst some of the series 2 Land Rovers were later painted yellow, then red, the series 1 Land Rovers never were.

Interesting stuff gents - thanks very much, especially for clearing up the question about the Land Rovers colour. The Land Rover L4L on station would tie up with Petes mention of KPX 928D which should have been at Shoreham in 1972 i believe. I am assuming the FoT GLC891 is an ex AFS machine and was at Shoreham from the late 1940s - am i correct? - i have found a photo of what looks like it at Shoreham in 1954 with a trailer pump but can not read the registration clearly. Confirmation.The appliance in the bay is UPX293,a Dennis F8(Yellow)WrT.In the middle bay was the Landrover mentioned above reg-KPX928D. Also I'm confirming that in the garage at rear of station in yellow was 68KPX. This could mean the 1972 Dennis F49 was in use at that time but not on the station as Bristol Bob confirms, the bay was empty.

Tony, Just the final word this picture would have been taken early 1966 I am sure the Land Rover shown was converted to assist building and supply within the Brigade (Civilianised) repainted broken white with full canvas rear cover and hardtop put on. (I have a photo)

1605 BP was a reserve Landrover, being ex:-Crawley in 1966, it may have been based as a Reserve at Shoreham as Jon states.1604 BP its sister was converted circa 1969 for Monty Hands Building Dept, not 1605 BP.

I believe the ATV is now in the Netherlands. They seem to have nearly as many as we do, at least 4 anyway.

Neal, around 88 ATV's were distributed by the Fire Inspectorate till July 1945. Not sure how many came after that date. I know of 3 units in Holland:
1 in the National Fire Service Museum Hellevoetsluis (x Medemblik NJ-32-72)
1 in Maurik preserved by the FS (84-SB-85)
1 in the Borculo Fire Service Museum (x Texel GX-5078)

1972 or whenever!

What is does illustrate is that this ATV was in front line service for nearly thirty years, which is a pretty decent innings for a "cheap and cheerful" mass-produced two ton van.

Many of these served with city and county brigades for decades after the NFS reverted to local control. A lot of them gained a hose reel tank and pump, and continued as trailer pump towing vehicles, first or second due, especially at smaller retained stations.

Others, like this one, served as specials, taking on roles as BA tenders, hose wagons, salvage tenders and control units as well as foam tenders, while some became workshop vans or were used as general runabouts and for such duties as hydrant testing or fire prevention inspections.

Very large numbers were indeed left in the Netherlands and these were similarly used for many years by the Dutch fire services - which had been pretty much hollowed out during the occupation in WWII.

Does anyone know which brigade/station had HrT GLT92 Latterly painted grey? Sold recently minus its Reg No which is for sale by a dealer of such things. I hope he gets stuck with it!!!

I believe the FoT at Wrexham was GXH 111. GLT 92 is recorded as serving as an ATV at Wrexham and then Johnstown
