South Yorkshires CARPS

Following om from the picture I posted the other day of Humbersides CARP at Grimsby Peakes Lane here are South Yorkshires 4 CARPS (2 deep) parked last summer out of the county and out of use awaiting a decision.

Having watched the programme tonight both Humbersides CFO and some woman from S Yorkshire said 'it wasn't their fault' it was a 'supplier cock up' and Humberside are going to use their £520,000 vehicle as a dedicated ariel which they could have bought for two thirds of the price !

Best Value as they say in Local Government circles!

This is the link to the BBC programme which Rick mentions;

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qf8g3/Inside_Out_Yorkshire_and_Lincolnshire_25_01_2010/

You will see the Chief of Humberside, declaring it was 'nothing to do with me'. This is the same Chief who was happy to see their beautiful Dennis Metz disposed of at auction after letting it stand outside for four years.....

(The programme is only available for one week from the date of broadcast (Jan. 25th. 2009) and is not avaialble easily to internet users from outside the U.K.)

Did anyone see The One Show tonight with one of the above in the background. Does this mean they are going to do something with them or was it just show boating??!

One of these South Yorkshire CARPS appears to have suffered from an ' uncontrolled descent' in other words the booms have come down of their own accord resulting in the 'articulating fly boom' attached to the cage being twisted and severely damaged when it came into contact with the ground !! - thankfully it appears there were no injuries ??

Can anyone confirm reports that South Yorkshire are getting rid of these appliances ?

Not everyone who visits this site is a fire fighter or fire appliance expert, therefore can someone explain the acronym CARP.

Steve, you could use the search function on this site.
Over the years this topic has been discussed exhaustively.

Marcel,
Thank you for your reply, I have looked at the other images of CARP's.
Boy has the concept caused some comments from fire fighters, past, present and internationally.
Best wishes,
Steve

South Yorkshire have decided to replace the CARP's as soon as possible with two brand new ALP's and four rescue pumps (delivery expected in 2014 or 2015)

The game plan is to have one ALP crewed full time at Central (Sheffield City Centre) and the other based at Doncaster which will be crewed by the retained or jump manned

At the moment, South Yorkshire try to keep at least one CARP on the run at Central, while the others are used as reserves. The CARP allocated to Rotherham never went on the run

The Brigade has two ALP's in the reserve fleet which get used as jumped manned machines at Doncaster or Barnsley!

Full details of the planned changes can be found on the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue website

Perverse as it may appear....South Yorkshire will argue 'these vehicles have been a success'.... they might have proved less than 'efficient' and have been beset with problems from the outset (along with the identical Humberside one) but, the facts remain that by doing away with the original ariel appliances (and the associated firefighter posts that went with them - 3 per watch @25 -30K per year) they have saved approx a third of a million pounds per station each year in wages ! Therefore in today's financial climate - they will argue that's a success !

This is copied from the South Yorkshire Game Plan...

The plans being put to the Authority also recommend the phasing out of the Service’s Combined Aerial Rescue Pump (CARP) appliances. These have saved the Service around £1.25m per year since being introduced in 2011, by combining the attributes of a rescue pump and an aerial capability into one vehicle. But firefighters and Fire Brigades Union officials have raised a series of issues about their performance.

Mr Courtney said: “We have consulted extensively with firefighters in the development of our new strategy and listened carefully to the feedback. When we reconsidered our entire frontline provision, we asked ourselves if we were now starting from scratch, would we choose to include the CARP appliances in our fleet. The answer was ‘No.’”

One of these was spotted in a service station on the M6 today (21.05.15)...after speaking with the driver it appears he bought it from auction in Wales and was driving it to Scotland !!.......Anyone care to ask South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service how much they sold it for?

Added by Rick Loudon on 21 May 2015.
Rick, here in Austria the calculation for running one truck 24/7 is 4.5 times the nominal crew (including holidays etc.). This is for professional fire services, of course.

I saw these at auction site I was a bit shocked with south Yorkshire.. whats replaced these aerials ??

Added by Nick Robertson on 27 May 2015.
Nick, I believe SYFR are just getting a Metz TL one of these days.

Bring back the humble TL, these things have proved to be less than useful, this 'one size fits all' has been a bit of a costly mistake in this country, we had one topple over near to where I live, considering our history of invention and firefighting innovation you would think we would have sort of got it right by now, i would dearly love to know just how much all this equipment has cost the taxpayer as it sits in yards quietly rusting away.

As of today (16/4/2016) one of the former South Yorkshire CARP's is at Rewley Road fire station in Oxford being prepared to go on the run as a dedicated aerial appliance for the period of time that their ALP is away being rechassised. Once their ALP returns the CARP will be disposed of.
I will post a photo shortly.

'Baked bean tins' is probably the best option !! Humbersides Grimsby bound CRAP from the same order has been at Scunthorpe as a 'dedicted ariel' for a while now...cost twice as much as a dedicated ariel though !!

Added by Rick Loudon on 20 April 2016.
You never know, the brigades who are getting these second hand may be getting a useful appliance at a cheap price . especially those that are using them as a normal appliance with extra capabilities .
