SDM391M County of Clwyd Fire Service

Registered on 9th October 1973, SDM391M was purchased by Flint Town Council and not as it is believed Flint County Fire Service. Acquired, it is believed prior to Mr D Wheyway-Davis CFO of D&MJFS inspecting the appliance presumably for A1 Wrexham. Placed on the run at B3 Flint to augment the towns fire cover as Courtaulds had a massive presence in the town with three sites at Castle works, Aber works and at Deeside Mill. She lined up with two other classic machines. the now believed scrapped Dennis F7/Dennis PE GDM 507 and the ex B2 Hawarden Leyland FK4/Leyland pump. The latter was fitted with and escape which is not known where it came from as the escapes on GDM 507 and BDM949J Bedford TK/HCB-Angus WrE at A1 Rhyl were in situ. My belief is that it came from Commer QX/Carmichael JDM 711 which was written off in 1971 in Oakenholt after coliding with one of Crosville's finest Lodekka DFG double decker's, going to a shout in Holywell in the town's bargain supermarket at Bank Place. Incidently this was the final shout for Austin K4/Merryweather 60' TL GXN 211 as in 1972 KDM860K an ERF 84PS/Jennings/Simon SS85' HP arrived from the manufacture's. GXN 211 was in the collection at Crosby but housed at Heswall for a while.

a fine addition to the Simonitor (TSM15) photos on this site, and a fascinating story that it was bought by the Town Council not the county.

I can remember looking at this appliance at Belle Vale fire station south Liverpool were it was in the spare bay, I was oic for the night,i was surprised who low the milage was on the clock it must have hardly turned a wheel during its service,we were running new appliances with more miles on. As for GXN 211 i can remember it in the run at Rhyl, we were on holiday and the TTL and a Commer appliance were parked by the clock tower on the prom collecting for the ben fund,I can also remember it being at Deeside for the rest of its service, i believe it went to British Aerospace after it came off the run then to Merseyside Museum.

She did indeed David. Many thanks for your comments. The Commers were classics too.
