Ford BACV at Shoreham

One of 3 West Sussex BA Control Vans, CPO 635L, a Ford Contact, introduced in 1973, originally painted in Coventry yellow livery. This appliance served at Worthing until 1993, when it was moved to Shoreham by Sea until retired in 1995, seen here in it's final year in the drill yard at Shoreham. The other two machines at Chichester (CPO 637L) & Horsham (CPO 636L) had the blue. flashing lights on the body rather than the cab
roof and were retired a year earlier. They carried a BA compressor, spare BA sets & cylinders, BA servicing equipment, gas tight Chemical suits, decontamination shower etc, the rear section openned out to perform control functions.

It would be great to see Crawley's line up during the 90's and 80's. I would like to see what HRT Crawley used b4 the p reg!

Alan,if your referring to the old 1976 Reynolds Boughton/Chubb Persuer(JPO 646P),it was known as a Crash Tender not a HRT.Before Crawley recieved that appliance they recieved one of the first 2 RangeRover/Carmichael'Commando'rescue units(TPO 514M)which later was trasferred to Horsham.
Fact:-Crawley originally were to recieve a Stonefield/Pilcher Green Rescue Tender but due to problems with it?,the WSFB did not except it from the manufacturers.I think the order originally was for 3 of the Stonefields, but it was never to be.I think one of the problems was the appliance could'nt carry all the equipment required, and caused weight problems with the chassis, etc. The actual prototype appliance is now in The Fire Services National Museum in Northamptonshire. If anyones got a picture,I'd most appreciate a copy please. All West Sussex used prior to the introduction of the RangeRovers RT's,and the Chubb CRT for Crawley were Landrovers converted to rescue tenders.
I hope this information as been of some interest to you-Pete(Ex-WSFB).

Thank you for the info. It's interesting to see that a range rover was used as a rescue tender. I assume then that Crawley still had an L4T with water and the Land rover rescue tender didn't? It would also be good to see the crawley line up back then on photo to make it a bit more clear as I was only born in 87!

Alan - i'll put a few Crawley pictures on soon, but not got a line up i'm afraid as being a Worthing lad i did not go that far north much until i got a car in 1990 & i'm too young to remember the 1976 Chubb CT mentioned above. Jon
