Hi, I have just bought the fire engine reg number JDL 998W, could you let me have or direct me in the direction of any history relating to it. Thanks Ian.

Ian this appliance spent all its operational life at Sandown fire staion with its sister appliance JDL 999W. It went of service in 1999.Hope this helps.

Here we have have a 1977 Specification Bedford TKG HCB Angus Crew Safety Vehicle on this occasion carrying a Angus Sacol 464 Ladder the appliance was supplied brand new to the retain station at Sandown and was joined by an identical appliance that started life at the whole time station at Newport. In 1977 The Isle of Wight Fire Brigade purchased an HCB Angus Demonstration Appliance in the unique livery of White and Red this colour scheme was created by HCB to give these new style Crew Safety Vehicles a futuristic look and suited the style and bodywork design. On receiving these new appliances the Brigade immediately adopted the colour scheme and the Island operated about six possibly seven of these engines along with special appliances in this livery. In the late eighties a Chief Fire Officer was appointed and in doing went back to a traditional red livery as shown.

Hi Ian,
My Grandfather was Station officer when these pair JDL 998W and JDL 999W were delivered back in 1980. These fire engines were christened by Princess Diana when she visited the station in 1986. One was called Prince William and the other Prince Harry. These names have tranfered to all the replacement engines for this Station.
Later in 2000, (i think) my wifes cousin bought one of these , his name is Trevor Philips, he later sold it, it may have been this one.
The Isle of Wight fire service sent alot of these TKGs, (i think there were at least 8 in total) to Romania as a charity drive, but I believe the two sandown appliances were sold to private buyers because of there royal links.

Also if I remember rightly, one of these engines was plagued with problems and for a while was replaced with a smaller bedford unit for a few months or years even. I have no pictures, but I know if you search the Isle of Wight county press archives , you may find something

This looks very modern for a 1977 build. And a nineteen year service life is pretty good, even if one of them had some teething troubles!
