Shelvoke and Drewery/Bronto HP

This Shelvoke and Drewery/Bronto HP was originally a Demonstrator. It was purchased by Cleveland County Fire Brigade in 1983/4, and allocated to Stranton in Hartlepool.
It has since been disposed of for scrap.
It is seen here back in 1995.

I love these shelvoke machines they look well smart just like the dennnis rs and ss. I believe london had a few hps as well as pumps, west midlands had some hp's and I believe warwickshire had one as well.If anyone has info or pics on these pls send in as I think these were in a class of there own just like dennis.

Hi Ian, I've just looked at that pic. Do you know when it was taken and the location? It doesn't appear to have a date on it, and it looks like a pre Cleveland shot.

The picture 8081 shows it when it was the demonstrator which was then bought by Cleveland and become A999 HAJ.Also look at my picture 15303 which shows what is beleaved to be the only other true Bronto hydraulic platform, again on a Shelvoke/Camichael chassis.

I forgot Cleveland had a Shelvoke, A nice machine though. How long was this is service? Did it just spend its time at Stranton?

This replaced the AEC Merryweather TL DEF420D at Stranton (Hartlepool), which was sold at the 1984 Teesside Airport Fire Engine Rally being sold to Cork County in Ireland.
This Bronto was allocated to Stranton all it's life and was withdrawn in 2000. I don't know it's current status, but I think I have a pic of it at the Maltby Car Auctions at near Yarm, but I'll have to check this.

Hi gents. I found the picture of the Bronto I was looking for, unfortunately upon checking the back of it, I've found it was taken by someone else, so I can't post it here (unless he gives me permission). However, I can tell you that A999HAJ was photographed alongside B141RDC at Maltby Auctions near Yarm in Cleveland. They are awaiting disposal, and the photo is dated June 2000.

There is a nice photo of this in action in a book when it was attending Cleveland's biggest shout at BASF in October 1995. The incident had whole of CFB called out to it with pumps from surrounding Brigades required to attend aswell as standby at CFB stations!

The BASF job went to 35 pumps (23 Cleveland, 6 Durham, 6 North Yorks) and specials of course. Pete is quite right about it being one of only two true HPs built by Bronto. The other one was Leicestershire's.

If I recall rightly the aerial appliance chassis sold by Shelvoke and Drewery was designated the WY, whilst that used for pumps (as used by London) was the WX.
Devon Fire Brigade had three Merryeather TL's and a Simon HP refitted onto S and D chassis, with the HP still being on the run at Camel's Head in Plymouth when I joined Red Watch at that station in 1986.
