Alpha Crew at RAF Marham in 1978

Alpha Crew at RAF Marham in 1978, this was a practice fire held for H.M. The Queen on her inspection of the base in August of that year. Pictured are two Dennis Mk 9 appliances with crews fighting a fire on the carcass of a Victor K1 tanker aircraft.

the mk 9 was/is a Thornycroft nubian major mk 2
the Dennis bit is the top hamper

Sorry Allan, forgot to mention the chassis and engine. Its the Dennis bits that made this such a good machine. A lot of civilian Nubians didnt have the internal details of the RAF machines, access to the monitor position being via external stairs. This, is in the opinion of many of us who used both types by far the best version.

As I remember it was a Thorneycroft Chassis and Dennis pumping equipment slightly different from the CAA Type thorney's,set up which had a platform for monitor operator,RAF/Navy they were enclosed in Stand in rear cab area on Mk9's

Robert thats correct, it allowed a Mk9 to produce on the move without the monitor operator having to access the platform and via the driver / monitor mans headset making two man operation possible.

I have a photo almost the same as above except it has a Mark 6 plus a DP2 (may have been a DP1) in it. The photo is from 1966/67 when I was on the RAF Fire Section.
Nice to see that not everything has changed at Marham. I would like to visit there sometime.

Does anyone know the registration numbers of the Mk9s at Marham or of these two in this photo please? I have just learned that the three Mk9s stationed here in Malta in the 70s had reg numbers 27AJ04, 27AJ08 and 27AJ13. I have found a pic of 13 at RAF Marham taken in June '96. Any info, photos and the fate of these three appliances would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
