Thankyou Phillipe, is this pump small because of narrow streets?

Rural rescue pumper. Bossot Fire Station. Catalonian Regional Fire Service.

Body by Protec.

John: It has a short wheelbase and rear overhang to facilitate off road operations, as it is a 4X4 designed to serve rural as well as urban areas.

At 15 tonnes GVW it is still beefier than London's 14 tonne Ategos, has a similar six person cab and probably has at least a 2000 liter tank. It is also designated as an RTA rescue pump, so it must carry hydraulic rescue kit.

I imagine the payoad has less other gear by way of hoses, ladders (obviously!) and structure fire tools and equipment. Units like this often have to travel long distances to incidents and have no access to hydrants or other external water supplies, so fire fighting is often limited to exterior attack and using what is in the tank!

Having said all that, Catalonia does have a lot of old cities with very narrow streets, too. In fact, many stations run compact Mercedes Vario 8 tonne van-based pumps as their urban first due units, just as they do all over the rest of Spain.

This Atego most likely runs as the first due at rural fires and RTAs, and second due in the town.

Catalonia passed legislation many years ago that every community over 5, 000 population had to have its own fire station. Now the Regional Fire Service is not surprisingly almost entirely volunteer-based, with no less than 146 fire stations.

Most of these operate either a single pumper or two units.

The busiest station, which is one of a handful which do have full-time members, responded last year to over 640 calls. The least busy handled only six alarms!

Barcelona is not protected by the Regional Fire Service. It has a separate full-time municipal fire department with seven main stations and one single pump satellite. This is not many for a city with a population of 1.6 million - the same number of stations as Seville, which has half as many people.
