Frankfurt Ladder Ecoliner

On a Mercedes Benz Ecoliner chassis, Magirus built a 30 metre ladder (DLK-23-12). This is the reserve ladder. The ladder from this fire station 40 was in the workshop.

The standard Ecoliner two axle chassis topped out at 13 tonnes GVW. Adding a trailing steering axle increased the GVW to accommodate the tower ladder - and provided for much enhanced maneuverability, thanks also to the very short wheelbase too.

In some ways, this mirrors the UK fire appliance builders who hung a dead trailing axle behind 4X4 Land- and Range-Rovers. These also improved their payload, but they did not of course do anything to improve their turning radius...
