Firefighter Jobs

Firefighter is an interesting, varied and challenging job. You will be called upon to deal with all sorts of emergency situations from RTCs (road traffic collisions) to fires and from hazmat situations to general rescue operations. It is a valued job where often you will deal with sensitive situations and members of the public that might be affected in many ways.

The modern service does a lot in the field of prevention too. So part of the job is to assess and communicate in local situations in the community, from schools to all sorts of voluntary organisations. Your tasks might include education and help people and organisations understand their individual fire safety.
And to be able to do all this you will be training continually, educated in theory and plenty of practical sessions. You can imagine that the job can be very demanding, both physically and mentally. Working on your fitness level will be important too.

Depending where you live there will be different forms of employment or other involvement with the Fire Service. A career could be wholetime, part-time or voluntary. You can find civil firefighters but also in the military, working for specialist bodies (forestry for example) and there are many related EMT careers too. And there is a wide range of jobs to do: firefighter, paramedic, instructor, crew manager / chief, watch manager, fire chief, station chief and so on. Different countries have different titles for the same fire service job or split duties and workload in a different way.

An example is the retained firefighter: a lot of rural communities have a form of 'retained' firefighters, meaning that you will act on a call (by pager). It means you need to live close to the Fire Station you would be assigned to and be able to respond to an emergency within a few minutes.

The actual recruitment process will take place in several steps: initial application, psychological tests, physical tests, one or more interviews, a medical and finally references will be required. It can be competitive environment, so if you like a job as a firefighter you best prepare as well as you can. There are a variety of web sites which will help you in finding a job and prepare you for the process - or for instance.
